Austin learned some French in high school, and then while he was serving his mission for the church for 2 years and learning Spanish, he decided to keep learning French! He did really well translating for us and talking to French people. We were really impressed! It was neat to hear him speak it.

A couple of nerve-wracking things happened on the metro in France! I don't remember what days they happened on.

One time we were on it and a man started yelling in French. We asked Austin what he was saying, but he didn't tell us until later because he said that the guy was talking about Jesus Christ. It freaked him out because often before someone commits suicide, they shout things like that. Austin didn't want to scare us, too!

The other scary thing that happened was the time we got on the metro and there was an announcement in French, but Austin wasn't paying attention. All of a sudden almost everyone except us and a few others in our car jumped off the train quickly! The train then left! As we looked down the whole train, ours was the only car with people on it! The train went for about a minute and then stopped in a tunnel! Oh boy, we were nervous. We envisioned having to get out of the train and walk down the tracks! After a couple of minutes the train driver walked down to us and said, "You English?" with a smile on his face. He said that that train was being turned around and would be pulling back into the station, but on the other side of the tracks. Phew! So once it did we got off and walked back to the right platform.
