We enjoyed a fabulous last day in Salzburg on Thursday, Oct. 8th. Unfortunately, it was a little cloudy. We first went up Untersburg Mountain in the cable car. It is WAY up there! It was so disappointing that there were clouds surrounding it, so our view was seriously blocked. But we had fun together, and walked around for a while on the mountain, and then enjoyed some hot chocolate and our picnic lunch while waiting for the cable car back down.

Random painting on the side of the cable car building! There's a legend that a king lives in the mountain with dwarves.

Looking down from the top of the mountain to a home! Surrounded by clouds.

We saw a group of mountain goats grazing and climbing around.
Tyler, reading a war memorial.

Our next visit was to Hellbrunn Palace. It's an estate that was built as a summer daytime retreat by a prince-archbishop, so there's no bedroom there!

In the Chinese room. The wall-paper was hand-painted! Apparently, a Chinese room was a sign of status and wealth in palaces of the times.

Gorgeously painted room
The archbishop who had this estate built, Markus Sittikus, came up with the idea to have fountains and trick fountains built throughout the property. We were lucky to be there at the right time to get a tour of them. He thought it was funny to get his guests wet as he showed them around the gardens and fountains! All of the water works are water powered. And they were built in the mid-1700s!
As the archbishop and his guests would sit at a table on the far side of this pond, he could turn on sprayers that would spray from underneath every seat but his!

Water spraying up from the stairs, and out of the deers antlers and nose!
Along this path and little brook are little miniature figurines moving by water power.

This display has 175 miniatures that all move around, powered by water. The Prince-Archbishop would have his guests stand on steps in front of it to watch the little show, and then spray them with water from underneath their feet!

Must take the opportunity to pose as a statue! :)

In the gardens.

A little play time on the playground

Back into the city. Mirabell Palace and gardens.
Striking the statue pose, like they do in The Sound of Music

Posing fail!

Michelle & Dave mimicking the statue pose! Haha! :)
Running around the fountain, like in The Sound of Music
Doing the Do-Re-Mi pose on the stairs. I'm Maria, if you didn't know. :) There were a couple of girls here taking photos just before us. We asked if they would take our picture, and we would take one of them. As we chatted for a minute, they said they are attending BYU - Idaho and were in Salzburg on a school trip. More US neighbors. :)

Janae, falling off the unicorn! Mounting fail ;)

Again from The Sound of Music, in the Mirabell Gardens still.

Another Sound of Music filming site.
A stop for delicious pastries! MMmmmmm.
After this, Dave and Janae went back to the apartment so Dave could do some work and Janae could do some school. The boys and I stayed in Salzburg and did some shopping. I wanted to get a music box from there as a souvenir, because I have a collection of music boxes, and because it's the city of The Sound of Music and the city of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I found one at the last shop we went to. I didn't want a kids style or a cheap plastic one, which is what most of the stores had. I found one that is a really pretty Faberge copy. It's an egg style that opens up and plays a pretty song. I was glad that I found it.

When we got back home, Josh and Dave went to the school next door for Josh to run a mile and time it. He had to do that for his PE class. And then we had a delicious dinner of tomato soup, salad, bread and cheese.
